When you leave your child with a daycare provider or a teacher, you expect the child to be safe. But every year, many children are injured in these settings. A school injury can occur anywhere on school grounds, including playgrounds and sports fields. You want teachers to exercise the type of responsibility that a good parent would when you leave your children with them. However, not all teachers take good care of their students and not all schools, school buildings, or school playgrounds are safe.
Schools may allow fights among students to occur, leading to physical injury. Lack of protection or supervision can even result in sexual assaults and molestation. Not only can a student suffer from physical injury, but also psychological damage.
Below are some examples of other school accidents that can be dangerous:
- old broken stairs that are not repaired can cause someone to trip and fall;
- old chairs can collapse;
- pieces of lead paint can still remain in older buildings which can lead to serious health problems;
- student hazing;
- classrooms do not have the appropriate safety equipment;
- science lab accidents;
- teachers and/or sports coaches with little or no safety training;
- sports coaches pushing students to play with injuries, which can lead to more serious injuries;
- insufficient lab equipment which can lead to burns and other injuries;
- playground accidents;
- school trip accidents;
- lack of supervision at school or on school trips;
- inadequate security; or
- teacher assault.
Another example of an injury that can happen at school is chemical burns. Chemical burns can happen in schools if cleaning products are left unattended or used incorrectly. These products should be secure and monitored carefully. Chemical burns can also happen in classrooms, especially science labs. The school needs to provide safety gear such as protective covering, eyewear and gloves. Also, in case an accident does happen in a science lab, the school should be prepared with the necessary safety gear such as eyewash stations.
When teachers, administrators, and other school staff members fail in to keep children safe from harm, both physically and mentally, they need to be held accountable. Our lawyers handle this aspect of personal injury law. |
